Windsor A to Z Project

 The blocks are still coming in: 22 letters so far, and three of the corner stones.

I've embroidered the details and the contributers' names under each one, and stitched them on.  We had a summer fate at school and had them pinned to a display board - I didn't think to get a photo, but my glamorous assistant did - thank you Claire!

Kids' Crafts at Chertsey Museum

Today's craft at Chertsey Museum was Junk Weaving Wall Art.  We started with a shoe box lid, and cut small V notches in both short ends (same number in each, generally 7, 8 or 9) and wound string or wool around them, settling in each notch, then knotting at the back.

This created our warp, then we hit the junk table to create the weft . . .

 

Some amazing ideas, and great art, all from junk . . . and I caught some mums enjoying themselves too!

Final A to Z session

The last A to Z session was held today - it went really well with some more great ideas.

If you haven't read about this before, read on for a brief summary:

Blocks are being created by parents and children, governors past and present, and staff at Trinity St Stephen School.  30 blocks, celebrating the children's choice of icons of Windsor, will be put together in an A to Z wall hanging.  Each A to Z block is based on the child's drawing, and created by parent and child/ren using felt and assorted 'stuff'.

Four additional blocks are being made to show the two Windsor churches associated with the school (Holy Trinity Church and St Stephen's Church), the school itself , and to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Once completed, the Wall Hanging will go on a Parish Tour: being displayed at the two churches, Windsor Library and Windsor Museum, The Fire Station Arts Centre, and, very excitingly, within Windsor Castle itself, before being returning to our school to be hung in the school reception area.

A to Z Project Progression

 We had our penultimate A to Z session on Saturday - and what a great collection of blocks are being worked on . . .  As usual, I didn't get picture of them all, but the ones I snapped . . .

 Now I have to add something about this one.  If I tell you the child doing this is 6, you will assume (I think) that mum has taken the child's idea, and is working from a reference book - so I have also taken a photo of his original drawing - how awesome is that!

And totally unrelated, I am so glad that to go to work I turn left of of my road . . . if I turned right this is what I would have been joining on Friday!

Museum in May

Today's theme at Chertsey Museum's Fun With Fabric was 'Gadgets' - not much to show from the session, although we all had fun playing!

However, inspired by last month's Mola workshop, they were some great pieces for Show and Tell:

Mahala created this embellished geometric piece, and also made some other patches using a combination of this technique and the reverse applique from a few months ago

Scarlett, our 'new girl' has fitted in really well, and made this lovely cat

Iris is still working on this paisley inspired block with stunning vivid colours

 Me? I started a fish, but didn't finish it!  Next month we are looking at Somerset patchwork - once I work out how to do it!

Wednesdays In Windsor

We had a great group of working this week for the A to Z project.  All but one family had attended before, so there wasn't so much for Claire and I to do in the way of explaining, so I managed to get plenty of photos this week.

This is block is P for Park - with a witches hat, slide, trees, flowers, birds and clouds - N and N stitching down some of the details

J for Jubilee River.  Here N is doing some really neat stitches: I think I need to borrow him to teach some of the adults!

 A and his mum and brother have the letter N, and are working on Windsor by Night, - they have picked some really bright colours to show up against the night sky.  I think I might introduce them to glow-in-the-dark thread!

O and his mum got the letter O, and have chosen to show the Olympic Rowing which will be held at Dorney Lake near to Windsor.  Lovely snipping for the sun's rays there O!

The lovely G who isn't even old enough to come to school yet is attending every week as mum is helping deliver the classes - here she is sewing cherry blossom onto her patch for the trees in Alexandra Park

H and L have the letter R and have chosen Royalty.  There is a castle, a corgi, and Will and Kate holding hands - here I caught H stitching the castle to the background, great choice girls.

 This project is turning out to be so much fun!

Monday's Makings

The "Girls" at the Windsor class  hardly seemed to need my help at all on Monday this week: Catherine was following a magazine's instructions to make a Union Flag purse.  She knitted it in blue, and is now 'embroidering' over the stitches with more of the wool but this time in colours.  (Thank goodness she didn't need help, as I cant knit!!!)

Sanjita and Amrita are both making I-Spy quilts: Sanjita is ready to base next week, and Amrita has started quilting hers - fab patchworks ladies

Jane is working on her second Christmas Advent Calendar: stitching the hems on the pocket flaps.  A long job, but it's looking good

Katie is stitching the binding onto her table runner - and despite occasional cries of 'I cant do this' is doing a great job and very soon will have a table runner to put on her table - yippee!
